WHEN WITCHCRAFT BECOMES WITCHCRAP
There was a time not long ago, before the web, where learning witchcraft took some effort. You couldn't just type in what you wanted to know in a search box, you had to actually go to the library, book store or actually know someone to learn anything. This limited the "jumping" around to different paths and just taking what you wanted and ignoring the rest, especially if you studied under someone.
The New Age Witchcraft (the type that has taken root since about the late 60's to now) is one of the worse offenders of this type of practice. They pick and choose what they want to learn and practice without doing the research or as Michael has stated in a previous blog, a sound foundation. That's not to say it can't be done, but in this age of instant gratification, practitioners, especially new ones, be it New Agers, Wiccans, Charmlings (those who blindly follow Charmed) or Harry Pottheads (that one is self- explanatory) want instant results and they want them now! This is where it becomes Witchcrap.
The internet has made it easy to become lazy, just look something up and try to put it into practice without the practice or the research needed before hand. When it had to be searched for there was an effort and reward system involved that is quickly disappearing (the reward being the new spell or knowledge). Now anyone can create a page or blog and put out whatever information they want. There is a ton of false information out there that many new practitioners blindly follow and preach and most of it is Witchcrap. They believe what they read online without researching it, then get together in larger groups with false information and then it snowballs into a large shitball of people with no idea what they're doing, but their doing it enmass. What a shitstorm just waiting to happen. There is a lot of preaching going around nowadaysDo no harm to others, follow the law of 3 or 10 or whateverblah blah blah. We can thank Hollywood for some of this crap too! With shows like Charmed and movies like the Craft, we have a new crop of idiots and fluff bunnies that are worse than the generation before.
Witchcraft is an ancient practice that is quickly becoming bastardized into something unrecognizable by many of the older Witches. Hell, a witch from 100 years ago would have a hard time accepting what it has become now. My parting words for you is this, build a foundation, study and research and I'm not talking about reading a couple articles online, I'm talking about in depth research, learn the path your choice represents, understand it, practice it. Then, look at a different path if it doesn't work for you. Mixing is possible with limited results, but know the paths first. I work with elementals, but I wouldn't dream of trying to mix certain ones together, because they're not compatible and this can occur with different paths also, some are just not meant to mix.
Practice your Witchcraft and don't be lazy and let it become Witchcrap. J.G.
