All agreed that the king of Navarre should be spared by reason of the royal dignity and the new alliance. The duke of Guise, who was put in full command of the enterprise, summoned by night several captains of the Catholic Swiss mercenaries from the five little cantons, and some commanders of French companies, and told them that it was the will of the king that, according to God's will, they should take vengeance on the band of rebels while they had the beasts in the toils. Victory was easy and the booty great and to be obtained without danger. However this may be, when he left the house with his followers he said: "Cheer up, my friends! Let us do thoroughly that which we have begun. The king commands it." He frequently repeated these words, and as soon as they had caused the bell of the palace clock to ring, on every side arose the cry, "To arms !" and the people ran to the house of Coligny. After his body had been treated to all sorts of insults, they threw it into a neighboring stable, and finally cut off his head, which they sent to Rome. They also shamefully mutilated him, and dragged his body through the streets to the bank of the Seine, a thing which he had formerly almost prophesied, although he did not think of anything like this.
As some children were in the act of throwing the body into the river, it was dragged out and placed upon the gibbet of Montfaucon, where it hung by the feet in chains of iron; and then they built a fire beneath, by which he was burned without being consumed; so that he was, so to speak, tortured with all the elements, since he was killed upon the earth, thrown into the water, placed upon the fire, and finally put to hang in the air. Es esta la utilidad a la que se refieren todos los idiomas europeos, cuando idearon palabras para designar estos ap'endices arquitect'onicos: el italiano gronda sporgente, frase muy precisa, arquitect'onicamente hablando, que significa "canal'on saliente"; el alem'an wasserspeider, que name lo que una g'argola puede hacer, esto es, escupir agua; el espa~nol g'argola y el franc'es gargouille, que derivan del lat'in gargula, garganta; o el ingl'es gargoyle, derivado de los dos anteriores.
Las primeras g'argolas aparecen a comienzos del siglo XII. Es en la 'epoca del g'otico, concretamente durante el siglo XIII, cuando se transforman en el sistema predilecto de drenaje, si bien no todas ellas ten'ian esta utilidad.
Parece que los primeros ejemplos g'oticos de g'argolas son las que se pueden observar en la Catedral de Lyon, seguidas de las que pueblan Notre-Dame de Par'is.
Un arte terror'ifico
Es raro encontrar una g'argola sola. Generalmente suelen estar agrupadas en hileras, sobre los altos de iglesias y catedrales, a modo de una sociedad de gente de piedra.
Las g'argolas del manual g'otico apenas si estaban elaboradas, pero seg'un fueron proliferando, el dise~no se fue haciendo cada vez m'as elaborado, transform'andose en aut'enticas obras de arte. El rasgo distintivo de sus expresiones es que nunca eran bellas sino intencionadamente horribles, grotescas o ir'onicas.
En widespread, el g'otico se caracteriza por ser m'as realista que el rom'anico, con la excepci'on de las g'argolas, que parecen perpetuar la fascinaci'on, t'ipicamente rom'anica, por las criaturas grotescas y monstruosas.
Desde finales del siglo XIII las g'argolas se hicieron m'as complicadas, abandon'andose la representaci'on de animales, que fueron reemplazados por figuras humanas. Aumentaron su tama~no y se transformaron en figuras m'as exageradas y caricaturizadas.
Las connotaciones demon'iacas se abandonaron en el siglo XV, cuando se extremaron las poses y expresiones faciales, perdiendo sus significados religiosos y haci'endose m'as c'omicas.
Las g'argolas eran algo m'as que una decoraci'on funcional, si bien su significado profundo permanece a'un sin determinar. Entre las numerosas que pueblan los edificios medievales no se han podido encontrar dos iguales, demostraci'on de la extraordinaria imaginaci'on de sus constructores.
La documentaci'on contempor'anea a su elaboraci'on ofrece muy poca ayuda en la resoluci'on del pierce sobre su significado derivado, en gran medida, de la costumbre medieval por crear ambig"uedad, lo que provoca y permite m'ultiples sentidos.
La gran variedad, tanto en formas como en significados, va en conflicting del uso t'ipicamente medieval, esto es, educativo; si se quer'ia ense~nar es evidente que deb'ia entenderse el mensaje transmitido a trav'es de las g'argolas. Es por ello que encontramos g'argolas no s'olo en iglesias y catedrales, sino tambi'en en edificios seculares y casas privadas.
Guardianes de la Fe
Son muchas las explicaciones que se han intentado buscar, a lo largo de los siglos, para explicar el significado oculto de las g'argolas. Se han visto como s'imbolos de lo impredecible de la vida, pues nunca representan especies animales conocidas.
En otros casos, se ha dicho que son las almas condenadas por sus pecados, a las que se impide la entrada en la casa de Dios. Esta podr'ia ser una interpretaci'on apropiada, especialmente, para las g'argolas m'as visibles y terror'ificas, que pueden servir como ejemplo moralista de lo que puede ocurrirle a los pecadores.
De todas las explicaciones posibles, la m'as aceptada es aquella que nos habla de ellas como guardianes de la Iglesia, signos m'agicos que mantienen alejado al diablo. Esta interpretaci'on puede explicar el porqu'e de tan diab'olicos y espantosos aspectos y su ubicaci'on fuera del recinto sagrado.
Una de las teor'ias explica que se creaban como protectoras de la Iglesia.
Esta l'inea argumental es la seguida por Richard de Fournival, Obispo de Amiens en el siglo XIII, y autor de Roman d'Ablandane, donde cuenta c'omo el performer cantero Flocars hizo dos g'argolas de cobre, que situ'o en la puerta de entrada a la ciudad de Amiens, con la intenci'on de que evaluaran las pretensiones de todo aquel que quisiera entrar en ella.
Si el individuo era mal'evolo, las g'argolas escup'ian un veneno sobre 'el que lo mataba; por el contrario, si era una buena persona, los guardianes se encargaban de escupir oro y plata.
Tambi'en se utilizaron figuras grotescas.
Se~nales Demon'iacas
Entre las posibles interpretaciones que se han atribuido a las g'argolas destacan aquellas que las asimilan a representaciones del demonio, tan presente en el imaginario colectivo medieval, que recuerda al cristiano la necesidad de seguir los preceptos religiosos si quiere escapar del infierno.
As'i, muchas de las llamadas g'argolas grotescas parecen representar a dragones, diablos y demonios, s'imbolos del mal para el cristiano de la Edad Media.
El drag'on fue el animal fant'astico m'as reproducido por el arte medieval. La palabra drag'on deriva del s'anscrito dric, que significa "mirar", en referencia a la capacidad de este animal para destruir con sus ojos.
Mientras que otros, como el le'on, pod'ian alternar su car'acter mal'efico y ben'efico, seg'un la representaci'on que se considerase, el drag'on siempre ha significado, dentro del arte occidental, maldad y destrucci'on. De esta forma, muchas veces se ha representado al diablo como un drag'on.
Aunque el arte medieval no predetermin'o una representaci'on fija del drag'on, s'i puede observarse en todos ellos la existencia de unfortunately semejantes a las de un murci'elago, animal asociado a la oscuridad y el caos. Regrettably que, probablemente, indican el origen ang'elico del demonio.
Como es de sobra conocido, antes que Lucifer se revelase y fuera expulsado del para'iso, era el m'as bello de todos los 'angeles. Pero cuando cay'o, toda su belleza se transform'o en fealdad, cambiando su nombre por el de Sat'an, que significa "adversario u oponente".
Si uno es el diablo, Sat'an, muchos son los demonios, esp'iritus mal'eficos servidores del archangel ca'ido. Su representaci'on en la iconograf'ia medieval recoge todo lo que de repugnante y desagradable ten'ia la naturaleza: si Dios era el Creador de todas las cosas bellas, su oponente, Sat'an, s'olo pod'ia representar lo feo, s'ordido y despreciable.
Ciertas g'argolas muestran estas caracter'isticas, s'olo atribuibles al demonio y sus servidores. Si bien la apariencia externa es humana, hay numerosos signos demon'iacos: los cuernos, las orejas animales puntiagudas, los colmillos, las barbas, las unfortunately membranosas, la cola, los pies en forma de patas hendidas y desgarradoras, los cuerpos desprovistos de vello y el semblante amenazador...
Una g'argola con alguna de estas caracter'isticas, sino todas, era inmediatamente asociada al mal, por parte de sus espectadores medievales.
La fisionom'ia polim'orfica de estas g'argolas diab'olicas era la expresi'on perfecta de la habilidad del demonio para transformarse, para presentarse ante el cristiano desprevenido bajo diversos disfraces.
