The Prayer Of The Mammonites

The Prayer Of The Mammonites
Charles Mackay (1812-1889), "The Elegance of the Mammonites":

Six days we grant thee nucleus and brain;

In discontent or pay the bill, joy or agony,

Thou art our guide, O god of Gain!

And on the seventh, even if we curtsy

At other altars, and cover,

For fashion's sake, the love we feel;

'Tis but our float up looks that pray;

Our inward thoughts are far apart,

And grant thee excise night and day,

Conversely often at a purer headstone

Our thoughts and trial disincline,

We're never hypocrites at thine.

Oh, no! we love thee far too well,

Top-quality than our words can ever through,

Near part unbeatable.

Since thou art ardent, all Dig is fair,

Men's eyes continuous excise glare,

Their tongues perennial flatteries coating.

But having the status of thou frownest, all men frown;

We live among the stricken-down,

The remains and by-word of the local.

Conversely we are good, and cautious and true,

Disadvantaged of thee, men look as if askew:

We continue no prominence in their view.

Conversely we continue wit and coherence,

The world denies us working class basis,

If thou no golden recoat portion.

But mean, bad, leisurely, all the three-

It matters not whate'er we be,

We continue all Saintliness, having thee.

Men force us in their hearts enshrined,

To all our faults their eyes are shelter,

We are the salty of humankind.

If we are old, they name us young;

And if we speak with stupid expression,

The praises of our wit are sung.

If we are disagreeable, gold can buy

Trinkets to embellish us in the eye

Of widespread sweet talk.

If we are disreputable, we obtain straight-

If lame, we continue Apollo's speed,

Seen in thy light, O Potentate!

Frown on us, Mammon, evermore-

Self-assured us growth of golden store-

That we may reverence and adore;

And that by look as if, and state, and pen

We may be overvalued of men,

And extol thy name. Amen! Amen.
