La imposici'on de una religi'on ha roto la armon'ia de las gentes del Hemisferio Sur en sus condiciones clim'aticas, solares y tel'uricas. En el Solsticio de verano se celebra la m'axima expansi'on de la vida en la Naturaleza y no el nacimiento de esta promesa de la vida en la protectora apertura de una cueva de la Madre Tierra. Se les hace ir al rev'es a la energ'ia que hay en su hemisferio por un mito religioso que, al fin y al cabo, tuvo que cristianizar a las poderosas fiestas paganas que en Europa se daban en aquellos tiempos. Todas las culturas que fueron conquistadas por el Imperio romano ten'ian sus fiestas solares, incluida la propia Roma; y con el advenimiento del cristianismo las adaptaron a sus intereses para mantenerse y prosperar.
En Catalunya tenemos nuestras propias tradiciones, muy relacionadas con el paganismo aunque no lo parezca.
Nos vamos a centrar en la Sagrada Rueda de la Vida y los nombres celtas de sus festividades, porque son m'as representativas en Europa que las romanas. Y porque el tradicional calendario celta, con sus dos 'epocas (la de Oscuridad y la de Luz) divide los dos medios a~nos con sencillez y naturalidad. Adem'as se rige por el calendario de 13 meses lunares, cada cual con el nombre de una especie vegetal que florece o fructifica en esa luna. Se nombra cada una de sus lunas con el nombre de un 'arbol, la mayor'ia, o arbusto.
Yule es el t'ermino celta que se traduce por Navidad y ambos son de origen pagano. Uno dru'idico y el otro del paganismo de la antigua Roma. Natividad ser'ia el cristiano, pues pretende celebrar el nacimiento, la natividad de Jes'us. No confundir Navidad con Natividad.
La decoraci'on de nuestras casas y de las calles de nuestra ciudad viene directamente del pasado pagano. En Oriente no hab'ia nieve en la poblaci'on de Bel'en y tampoco el 'arbol de Navidad; pero nuestro esp'iritu arquet'ipico, en lo m'as profundo de nuestro psiquismo recuerda y pervive el sentir de percibir el verde perenne del abeto, del pino o del cipr'es cuando los dem'as 'arboles ya est'an desnudos y como muertos. Y tambi'en es conmovedora la serena paz y amor que en la tradici'on cristiana une las figuras de la Virgen Mar'ia y el Ni~no; que tan claramente evoca el mito de las antiguas celebraciones del culto a la diosa en Yule, con el nacimiento del Ni~no-Sol durante la noche m'as larga del a~no.
Aunque la noche pida ruido y diversi'on y muchos la celebren bailando y cantando por su aire festivo, en el fondo nos gusta un momento de silencio, de quietud y calma. La Tierra est'a en su momento de descanso invernal, esperando que la luz aumente y las semillas de vida puedan germinar y dar su fruto.
La cueva representa el tr'ansito entre nuestra conciencia ordinaria y la m'as profunda e interior. Por eso en la cueva del humilde pesebre es donde nace el Ni~no-Sol o el Ni~no-Luz. Donde luce nuestro "sol interior", nuestra espiritualidad; y en tal fecha se armoniza con la Tierra y el Astro Solar para recrear el Misterio. El misterio del "Alumbramiento de la nueva luz" y no de un beb'e.
En Yule celebramos el re-nacimiento de la vida, de la luz y hace referencia a fiestas muy antiguas indoeuropeas en las que se celebraban los cambios de la naturaleza en su ciclo anual en el Hemisferio Norte. Esos cambios iban en torno a la Naturaleza-Sol, como trat'andose de una pareja divina de dadores y sustentadores de la vida.
No se diferencia la Navidad de la Natividad, porque ambas celebraciones se han hecho coincidir. M'iticamente se refieren al mismo fen'omeno, pero religiosa y culturalmente hasta se oponen.
La palabra Yule todav'ia existe en algunos pa'ises como en Escocia, Noruega, Dinamarca y Finlandia. Se suele considerar actualmente el periodo festivo comprendido desde el d'ia de Nochebuena hasta el primer d'ia del a~no nuevo o Reyes.
En los c'irculos religiosos cristianos, desde el catolicismo hasta el protestantismo, el t'ermino Natividad es el correcto, que anuncia el nacimiento del ni~no Jes'us y as'i se distancia y diferencia de navidad de origen pagano y de yule de origen claramente dru'idico.
Los antiguos romanos celebraban el solsticio de invierno, cuando "el sol vence a las tinieblas" y empiezan a alargarse los d'ias. Cuando el emperador Constantino, con el edicto de Mil'an, declar'o el cristianismo romano como religi'on oficial del Imperio, los romanos segu'ian celebrando sus tradicionales fiestas solsticiales invernales; entonces la Iglesia decidi'o absorber esa fiesta d'andole un sentido cristiano, puesto que hasta entonces no se celebraba la Natividad del Se~nor "Nativitas Domini". El sol pagano (Apolo) que vence a las tinieblas se transforma en Cristo, y desde entonces la Navidad se corresponde con la noche del 24 al 25 de diciembre, cuando el solsticio es entre el 21 y 23 de diciembre.
En la mitolog'ia n'ordica europea, el dios de la luz parte en Sanhaim (31 de octubre a 1 de Noviembre) a la Tierra del Eterno Verano (el Submundo), para preparar su renacimiento, siendo su lado oscuro coronado como rey de la mitad oscura del a~no. Es la 'epoca de la cabalgada de Od'in. Es as'i que en medio de la noche m'as oscura del a~no nace la nueva luz, la promesa de vida, el ni~no-sol divino. Yule significa "Rueda". Es el punto en el que la Sagrada Rueda de nacimiento/muerte/renacimiento se completa. Se celebra en el propio solsticio el 21 o 22 de diciembre seg'un el a~no y es cuando se produce la ruptura de la mitad Oscura del a~no. Con el nuevo amanecer, el sol se eleva ya un poco m'as y se queda d'ia a d'ia un poco m'as en el cielo. Yule es la noche m'as larga del a~no. Para los antiguos era esperar el nacimiento del Rey Roble, el Dios Sol, el Creador de la Vida, que calentaba la Tierra helada; y la "diosa", la Madre Tierra, que con 'el cuidaba y guardaba las semillas durante el oto~no y el invierno en sus entra~nas esperando el aumento de luz y calor para brotar y florecer.
Yule encierra en s'i todos los dioses solares, las diosas madres y la "Triple diosa" (hija-madre-anciana). El mito m'as conocido sobre la diosa ser'ia la relaci'on del dios Dagda y la diosa Brighid; la divina hija, Brighid ense~n'o a los forjadores el arte del fuego y los secretos para trabajar el metal. La llama de Brighid, como la llama de la nueva vida, atraviesa la oscuridad del esp'iritu y de la mente. Mientras que Dagda con su caldero asegura que la naturaleza, siempre provea para todos los ni~nos y criaturas del mundo.
El nacimiento del dios sol ocurre en una cueva, que representa la propia Tierra; por ello una de las actividades de Yule es construir una cueva.

Este segundo personaje queda perfectamente reflejado en la figura patriarcal de Od'in con su famosa cabalgada nocturna de caza que empezaba la noche del 31 de Octubre y conclu'ia en la propia noche del solsticio en Yule.
Para los celtas el a~no empezaba en la 'Epoca Oscura en Sanhaim cuando Dagda (dios de la luz, abundancia y la vida) y Morrigan (diosa de la noche, guerra y muerte) hacen el amor, permitiendo que sus dos mundos aflojen sus r'igidas fronteras. Pero en tiempos anteriores a su llegada, el a~no comenzaba el d'ia del solsticio con la fiesta que se llamaba "Fiesta o Noche de las Madres". Desde los tiempos m'as remotos hab'ia un culto localizado a las Madres. Este culto se encontraba extendido por todos los pa'ises germ'anicos y celtas. Era tal su popularidad que podemos encontrar altares de sacrificios, piedras de inscripciones y exvotos dedicados a las diosas en toda Europa, sobre todo en el Bajo Rin, Colonia, Mar del Norte, Inglaterra, Italia, e incluso en C'ordoba (Dedicado a Aufaniae). Las madres eran culto popular dado a que ellas ten'ian poder sobre la realidad inmediata, y como es normal y corriente de un inter'es m'as real.
Los nombres de las Madres son much'isimos, pero sin embargo hay una relaci'on en com'un en su significado. Entre los nombres m'as frecuentes podemos encontrar las Alagabias "Las que lo dan todo", Aufanias "las Generosas", tambi'en Gabias "Las dadivosas" cuyo nombre es el mismo que la diosa Vikinga Gefjon. Otras madres dieron fuerza y 'exito como Aflias "Poderosas". Otras ofrec'ian sabidur'ia como Saitchamias y Ahueccanias, que significar'ian "Adivinas de Agua". Tambi'en encontramos madres con el nombre de algunos r'ios sagrados. O se~noras de los 'Arboles tales como Alatervias "Se~nora del Roble" o Berguiahenae "Se~noras del Abedul". Hay madres sanadoras, que ayudan en el parto, de las bodas, del hogar Tambi'en Madres que ten'ian poder sobre los juramentos, o con la guerra, las batallas y la muerte. Sin duda estas fiestas estaban relacionadas con la tradici'on de la Gran Diosa Madre, seguramente del Calcol'itico europeo, en una 'epoca anterior al patriarcado cuyo mayor exponente es el mito de Od'in. "La Noche de las Madres" y Yule es la misma festividad y en ambos casos representa el nacimiento del ni~no-dios-sol como inicio de un ciclo de renacer tras la muerte.
EL TRONCO DE YULE
El culto dru'idico veneraba al 'arbol en especies tales como fresno, roble, pino, tejo, etc., y se deb'ia a la sacralizaci'on de todos los elementos de la naturaleza.
El 'arbol sagrado ten'ia el nombre de divino Igdrasil ('Arbol del Universo), en cuya copa se hallaba el cielo, Asgard (la morada de los dioses) y el Valhalla (el palacio de Od'in); mientras que las ra'ices profundas se encontraba el Submundo, Helheim, (el reino de los muertos). Los habitantes del Norte de Europa celebraban el nacimiento de Frey, dios sol de la fertilidad, adornando un 'arbol perenne, en la fecha del solsticio. Posteriormente con la cristianizaci'on, los cristianos tomaron la idea del 'arbol para celebrar el nacimiento de Cristo, pero cambi'andose totalmente el significado.
En la tradici'on r'unica, se marcaba una pausa de 12 d'ias que iba desde el 25 de Diciembre al 6 de Enero, durante ese tiempo todo deb'ia detenerse. Era un tiempo sagrado que representaba la sucesi'on de las 12 lunas, y el propio 6 de enero la treceava. Antes de esa fecha se abat'ia un gran 'arbol perenne que se mantuviera verde todo el invierno. Para seleccionarlo se atend'ia a los designios sagrados del propio Od'in, seg'un unos, o a los de Morrigan, en otros. Se situaban trozos de carne al pie de los posibles candidatos y unos observadores vigilaban los cuervos, las aves sagradas de ambas divinidades. Luego se abat'ia al 'arbol bajo del cual hab'ia estado el primer trozo de carne devorado por los cuervos. El 'arbol elegido por el poder celeste representaba Igdrasil (El 'arbol del universo) uniendo los mundos entre s'i, siendo considerado del todo sagrado. Se cortaban sus ramas que eran repartidas entre los vecinos y que adornaban con ornamentos evocando la luz de la vida y la fertilidad y abundancia en el mundo (el origen del 'arbol de Yule). En el tronco se inscrib'ian los deseos colectivos de la comunidad, con la certeza que 'estos se har'ian realidad estando gravadas en su sagrada madera. Y hacia el final de Yule se cortaba y se repart'ia entre la gente que lo guardaba durante todo el a~no y que lo quemar'ia cada uno en la noche de Yule del a~no siguiente. He aqu'i el origen simult'aneo del 'arbol de Yule y del tronco de Yule o de la suerte.
Con la cristianizaci'on se cuenta que san Bonifacio (680-754), evangelizador de Alemania, tom'o el hacha y cort'o un 'arbol que representaba el Igdrasil, y en su lugar plant'o un pino, que por ser perenne, simboliz'o el amor de Dios, adorn'andolo con manzanas y velas. Las manzanas simbolizaban el pecado original y las tentaciones, mientras que las velas representaban la luz de Jesucristo en el mundo. Conforme pas'o el tiempo, las manzanas se transformaron en esferas y otros adornos.
Despu'es se agreg'o la tradici'on de poner regalos para los ni~nos bajo el 'arbol, enviados por los Reyes Magos, Olentzero o pap'a Noel dependiendo de la leyenda de la regi'on donde se encuentre. La tradici'on del 'arbol de navidad actual con los adornos actuales parece que se inici'o en Alemania y Escandinavia en los siglos XVI y XVII, extendi'endose a los otros pa'ises europeos.
En cuanto al tronco de Yule, ahora que la tradici'on del 'arbol sagrado de Igdrasil, no se realiza, se ha adecuado guardando el mismo significado arquet'ipico. Es la representaci'on gr'afica y simb'olica del renacimiento del dios. Preferiblemente el tronco deb'ia ser de pino o de roble. Tradicionalmente el tronco que se quemaba era el tronco utilizado en la celebraci'on del a~no anterior o bien un pedazo de tronco del 'arbol de Yule que despu'es de cumplir su funci'on navide~na, en vez de tirarlo, se guarda una parte de 'el para este fin. Si los que se utilizan son artificiales, se puede adquirir un tronco "nuevo" de los 'arboles mencionados y hacer la quema del tronco de Yule del modo tradicional.
Grava o pinta en el tronco la figura del sagrado sol, o un s'imbolo de la divinidad de tu coraz'on. La noche de Yule, prende el tronco en tu chimenea, o en una hoguera cuidando de no da~nar el ambiente, diciendo las siguientes palabras: "La rueda gira, el poder arde". Mientras ves el tronco quemarse visualiza al dios sol brillando dentro de 'el y medita acerca del "renacimiento". Y debe arder a lo largo de toda la noche haci'endose o no vigilia. Tradicionalmente se hac'ia vigilia acompa~nando el renacer del dios sol a lo largo de la noche m'as larga del a~no. Es identificarse con su largo proceso de renacer. Y las cenizas resultantes se cree que traer'an buena suerte al hogar donde se ha quemado.
EL TI'o DE NADAL
En relaci'on con el tronco de Yule, hay otra tradici'on que originariamente debi'o surgir de esta antigua fiesta celta. Es el "Ti'o de Nadal" en Catalunya, Arag'on y Occit`ania. Y esta es la que m'as me gusta, por la parte que me toca.
El d'ia 24 por la noche se celebra una tradici'on catalana que sustituye al Papa Noel, es el "Caga Ti'o" o "Ti'o de Nadal". Es una tradici'on pagana que proviene del tronco de Yule, del que ya hemos hablado.
El "Caga Ti'o" es un tronco con dos piernas, una barretina y una cara sonriente que se cubre con una manta y que en la noche de navidad 'caga' peque~nos regalos a los ni~nos.
La tradici'on empieza el d'ia 8 de diciembre, esa noche se elige el tronco y se tapa con la manta, cada d'ia hay que ir d'andole de comer y beber para que nos vaya fabricando los regalitos que recibiremos el d'ia de 24 de diciembre. El Ti'o no trae regalos grandes, trae regalos peque~nos o caramelos.
En Nochebuena se llevar'a a cabo el rito que hemos estado preparando todos estos d'ias mientras que hemos alimentado y calentado a nuestro "Ti'o de Nadal". Los ni~nos coger'an una vara y golpear'an al tronco y como el Ti'o estar'a bien alimentado porque lo hemos cuidado mucho durante unos d'ias, "cagar'a" debajo de la manta los regalos (originalmente eran turrones, barquillos y dulces) para los peque~nos sobre todo. Aunque a veces tambi'en "caga" para los mayores no os cre'ais. Mientras se le "pega" al Ti'o los peques de la casa tienen que cantar una de las varias canciones que hay para esta tradici'on.
En Catalunya se llama "Ti'o de Nadal", en Arag'on "Tronco de Nadal" o "Toza" y en Occit`ania "Cachafu`oc" o "Soca de Nadal".
Pero a'un se pueden encontrar poblaciones en las que el Ti'o es un gran tronco que se pone a quemar en el fuego de Navidad.
Tambi'en se cuenta que, a partir de su origen celta original (tronco de Yule), sufri'o una evoluci'on en la que este m'agico tronco, un d'ia cercano a la v'ispera de Navidad (24 de diciembre); llega a la casa llamando a la puerta. Quien le abre la puerta y lo acoge en la casa debe cuidarle, darle calor cubri'endolo con una manta y coloc'andolo cerca de una fuente de calor (chimenea, estufa, calefacci'on) para que no pase fr'io y darle de comer hasta el d'ia 24 por la noche, momento en el que se le hace "cagar" con la expresi'on "caga ti'o". Al introducirse esta tradici'on en las ciudades, al no ser tan f'acil conseguir un tronco, se pas'o a comercializarlo. Originalmente todos eran diferentes, porque simplemente era un tronco grande al que se le pintaba como cada uno quer'ia.
Se le da de comer pan seco, mondas de naranja, galletas y hay quienes le dan chocolatinas y dulces. Tambi'en hay que darle agua para beber, porque si no le cuidamos no podr'a "cagar" los regalos.
Al Ti'o se le hace "cagar" en Nochebuena o en Navidad, dependiendo de cada casa. Es una tradici'on que conserva todo un ritual tradicional. Es una ceremonia dom'estica, de c'irculos peque~nos (en casa, escuela o grupo de amigos) que consiste en recitar o cantar las canciones que antes comentaba y al acabar, golpear al tronco (suavemente, no hace falta partirlo en dos) para que este "cague".

Como veis, es totalmente pagano. Nada que ver con el cristianismo. Una cosa m'as que debemos agradecer a nuestros antepasados celtas.
S'e que mucha gente dir'a que s'olo son ganas de los catalanes por tener ancestros dru'idicos y celtas. Y m'as con lo caldeado que ahora est'a el ambiente. Pero si realmente nuestras ra'ices, parte de ellas, no fueran celtas... ?tendr'iamos estas tradiciones? Porque nuestra Castanyada tambi'en viene de una celebraci'on pagana y celta, no lo olvidemos.
